GoLive CS 2 Review
Day 2 - Pruning Site Size & Republishing
After taking a break from working in GoLive CS 2 to get this site ready and get some real work done today I opened GoLive again. Since I do not want to mess with the original site published up to the server I decided to change the publishing folder from golive-blog to golive-blog-edited.
Using File | Open Recent I was able to return to where I had left off.

The local site opened without a page loaded which is fine, I rather liked that. Remember everything I'm doing here is with a plain vanilla install of GoLive, no customization or messing with its settings. With no help file I poke around trying to find where to change the folder to publish to since this is what I see on the screen:
Notice that this window is inside the workspace. It is rather annoying that some panels float around outside while others stubbornly refuse to be anywhere except in the main workspace area.
Removing Source Images
An interesting occurrence happened when I went back to GoLive. When I went to change the site folder on the server (right click in site windows | settings | select server) GoLive shut down. I closed Dreamweaver and reopened GoLive. Then I was able to access the setting menu without crashing but I could not open any files in Dreamweaver. Instead Dreamweaver now crashed. The folder on my hard drive that GoLive and Dreamweaver are using are not the same so it should not be a matter of one of the applications locking a file. The folder Dreamweaver is using is defined as a virtual web in my local IIS server but the one GoLive is using is just a regular folder on the D drive.
Another interesting bit of trivial but with GoLive open I could not receive mail in Outlook 2003. I could send mail but not receive it until I closed GoLive, closed and reopened Outlook 2003. I don't know if this happens on other systems or not but is is very strange.
I had noticed that when GoLive was open some of my other programs like Outlook Express (for newsgroups) did not respond properly. So it appears that at least on my system and with the trial version GoLive does not 'play nice' with other programs.
Site Size Without Source Images
Now that the publishing is set to a new directory it is time to start editing. The first thing I am going to do is get rid of the tif files. They should never be used on a web and should not be anyplace they could accidentally be uploaded to your web server. By the same token the PhotoShop PSD files are better off in a folder that is not uploaded to the web server as well.

The file structure (collapsed) is:
Given the way GoLive adds tif and psd files to sites a useful but nonexistent feature would be the "cloaking" option in Dreamweaver or the "do not publish" option in FrontPage. To prevent publishing the psd files I will move them out of the GoLive folder using the file system since like FrontPage GoLive hides its system type files when inside the program.
After removing the source images, both tif and psd, the site is now a relatively svelte 386k.
Now it is time to start working on actual files.
